Ageing

On being 80

Hi everyone I thought I might give you some of my reflections on turning 80. This is due, partly, to the actual event of my 80th birthday, and also because I’ve just read one of my gifts, a book by

2025 – was a very mixed year.

Hello everyone I can’t say that 2025 was my most favourite year but rest assured this blog is not going to be a tale of misery. However, there were some negative aspects to it especially around my health. But I

My 80th year – and my attitude to that!

Hi everyone Yup, I shall be 80 in June 2026! I usually say, and how did that happen? I will try not to! Ha! So, what is my attitude to turning 80? Hmmm. Well, first of all, when one is

What I wear to the supermarket! Plus some positive news and some not quite so

Hi everyone I said in the last post that I love dressing up even when I go grocery shopping. So here’s a look at what I wore last Saturday to the supermarket. Here I am at home in my bedroom

Ageism and health

I see from a recent article (September 22) in The Guardian that GPs are to adopt ‘Jess’s rule’ to make sure they don’t miss serious illnesses and conditions. In December 2020 Jess died at the age of 27 of a

Balance – and not feeling balanced. Things to do to help this situation.

Hello! I am a keen observer of people.  For instance, I love people watching whilst having a coffee out in our small town of Lewes. When the weather is warm many of our coffee haunts have seats outside now, which

My word of the year

Hello everyone I’ve never done a ‘Word of the Year’ before, but it suddenly struck me after months of one step forward and two steps backwards that has been my fate, perhaps I ought to take on a word that

Reflections on the art of ageing well and a look at a proper teapot!

As I’ve said many times before, much of the writing and advice about ‘ageing well’ comes from people who are not actually old! In fact, I find it really frustrating now to read this kind of advice. For instance, it

Hello again! Here’s an update about the weather and my spine!

Hi everyone And a big thank you for all the wonderful comments you made on my last post. I found it quite reassuring to hear how many of you had suffered that awful nerve pain – and got over it.

An update and more Spring outfits

Hi everyone There’s been a bit of a gap between blogs and of course, you know why. It’s the sciatica. Which has been excruciating. There hasn’t been much help from Western medicine either as I don’t suit the majority of

About me

My name is Penny Kocher, I am 80 years old, and I live in the UK, in a small county town called Lewes. I used to write two blogs: Frugal Fashion Shopper and My Other Blog.
My reasons for setting up this new blog is that I am approaching 80 and the key question I have is, how do we make these years the ‘best of times’ whilst also acknowledging and dealing with our ageing bodies.

So, this new blog will have posts on health issues, but I will also write about films, television, books and visits to art galleries. Occasionally thrown into the mix will be a post on style, and ones that are more serious and/or political.

Above all I hope to have conversations with everyone who reads this blog.  Ageing comes to us all – let’s look at this ageing lark together!
